London Mayor unveils Climate Resilience Taskforce to transform city flood defences and urban heat response

London, United kingdom, November 6, 2025 — London Mayor Sadiq Khan announced the formation of a pioneering Climate Resilience Taskforce on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, aiming to revolutionise the capital’s flood protection and urban heat management. The initiative comes as London faces increasingly frequent extreme weather events, prompting city leaders to prioritise innovative solutions and long-term preparedness.

The Taskforce will bring together experts from government, academia, and local communities to develop advanced strategies for safeguarding vulnerable neighbourhoods. A £7.9 million investment has been earmarked over the next three years to support new green infrastructure, enhance waterways, and expand urban cooling projects. One-third of the funding will specifically target improvements to London’s rivers and canals, supporting both ecological health and flood resilience.

Mayor Khan emphasised the importance of equitable access to nature and climate protection, stating the programme will ensure all Londoners benefit from these advancements. The Taskforce’s work is expected to set new standards for urban climate adaptation across the UK.
