London, United kingdom, November 6, 2025 — London, 6 November 2025 — A cross-party group of London Members of Parliament has introduced a pilot scheme to trial ranked-choice voting in select borough elections, aiming to strengthen voter engagement and ensure broader representation. The proposal, announced at Westminster this morning, seeks to launch the pilot in Camden and Hackney during the May 2026 local elections.
Under the initiative, residents would rank candidates by preference, with votes redistributed until a majority winner emerges. Supporters believe this system, already in use in several global cities, will encourage more positive campaigning and give voters greater influence over final outcomes.
MP Sarah Patel, one of the scheme’s architects, stated, “This pilot is about empowering Londoners and making every vote count.” The plan has drawn praise from community leaders and electoral reform advocates, who view it as a constructive step towards revitalising local democracy. If successful, the programme could expand to additional boroughs in future elections.
